Death Valley: A Love Story – DVD & Therapeutic Guide

Death-Valley-Love-Story

Death Valley: A Love Story

Created by Natural Light Films and sponsored by the Samaritan Counseling Center, “Death Valley: A Love Story” is based on the stage play by Sandra Fenichel Asher. It is an emotionally honest exploration of love, loss and the grieving process. Inspired by the real journals of therapists and artists Carol Emerson and David Nutter, this film illustrates the powerful role of creative expression in restoring balance and hope.

Through the film, we are given entry to David’s and Carol’s lives, beginning with the ecstatic days of new love which all too quickly transition to a diagnosis of cancer and the trials of chemotherapy. We journey with Carol through the peaks and valleys of renewed and dashed hope, the agonizing recognition of David’s imminent death, and the depths of sorrow and loss that followed.  “Find Me in the Hills,” a message received in a dream that becomes a collage Carol creates, furthers the bond of love and begins the process of enabling her to carry on.  The music David loved and selections from his photography along with the colors and textures of Carol’s art and the mindful whisperings of her journal entries weave throughout the film.  This artistry guides us as we trace the course of loss and grief, as we return again and again to the love that is greater than death.  For more about the film, please click here.

Landscapes of Grief and Mourning: A Therapeutic Guide to Death Valley: A Love Story
Herb Landis, L.C.S.W., B.C.D. and Judith Kennedy, M.S., M.A., N.C.C., L.P.C.

This 28-page therapeutic guide is a sensory and expressive experience and is intended to be a gentle companion through the landscapes of grief.  The guide may be used individually or in a small group setting with those who have the same intention of working through and understanding the grief process.  Helpful books and websites are listed at the end of the guide.

The guide does not need to be used sequentially if you are using it individually.  You may find a page of the guide that resonates with where you are in your individual response to loss.  Go slowly, gently and reflectively with the promptings and poetry.  Be sensitive to your experience and seek support as needed.  The guide can be used by a group facilitator as well to work with a group of, ideally, no more than 12 members through a process of about 10 to 12 sessions.  Between sessions further reflection and expression can occur.  The group can be broken into sub-groups of 2 or 3 for confidential and emotionally safe sharing of individual responses to film clips and prompts.  For more information, please click here.
